The HandRight is a dynamic functional hand orthotic device that helps the user form the hand as needed to grasp and use any writing implement.

In Other Words: It helps the user learn to hold a pencil, marker, or crayon correctly!

It is designed to allow for natural movement of the fingers during handwriting through a light flexibility while preventing improper pencil grasp. This flexibility helps the user engage proper manipulative patterns and experience natural sensory feedback.

In Other Words: It’s somewhat squishy which allows for natural movement but always pushes back to the proper shape for handwriting.

The HandRight is the only device of its kind that allows the fingers and hand to contact the writing implement directly. Contact with the pencil allows the user to have the pencil at the closest point of control, nearest the tip.

In Other Words: Your child’s fingers touch the pencil directly—right near the tip—for better control.

Because the user is holding the pencil, they develop better tactile sense for pencil pressure, which can reduce fatigue in the hand, and they feel the drag of the pencil across the writing surface, which reinforces direction of movement and is essential sensory feedback. When the user holds a pencil correctly, the proprioceptive and kinesthetic feedback involves more joints and smaller muscles of the hand to create more accurate handwriting and better basis for mastering letter formation.

In Other Words: Because the user touches the pencil, not a pencil grip, they get the sensory feedback needed to learn how to write confidently.

The HandRight was developed over many years to solve the longstanding problem of immature pencil grip. We spent years iterating on the design to make sure that it fully accomplishes the intent and addresses this problem.

Other products are fitted onto the pencil, allowing for the use of only one writing implement at a time. They often don’t fit on markers or crayons, which are both always employed in the development of proper handwriting and pencil grip.

Though there are many other types of pencil grip aides, all focus on changing the pencil rather than fixing the hand formation. We, instead, developed the HandRight to help its user immediately and properly form the hand to effectively hold any writing implement. We are dedicated to devising only the most effective solutions to help kids succeed.

The HandRight is available in three sizes. Please use the sizing chart to determine the right size.

How to use

Slip the small ring over the thumb and the tall ring over the top two fingers (the index finger and the middle finger). The ring finger and the pinky finger should slide underneath the body of the device. Pinch the writing implement between your thumb and fingertips, and rest the body of the writing implement on top of the hand through the channel of the device. Place your hand on the paper and start writing!

Cleaning

The HandRight can be cleaned with mild soap and water. For disinfection, wash it in alcohol or in a mixture of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this better than cheaper alternatives?
The products currently available to help with this problem focus on changing the pencil or writing implements while the HandRight teaches the child to properly form the hand to make a mature tripod pinch immediately upon use. The proper formation then promotes more advanced fine motor manipulation. The HandRight allows the user to use any writing implement in the pencil box while other options fit onto one writing instrument only, and don’t fit on all types of writing instruments.
Is this only for kids having problems holding a pencil?
Resoundingly, no! This is a teaching tool for any child to use to initially develop proper grasp. But it is also invaluable in correcting bad habits.
For how long will my child need to use the HandRight?
This will depend on the child. We liken it to bicycle training wheels. You can’t just use training wheels for one day and expect the child to develop the balance necessary for riding a bike. Just like training wheels, fine motor skills and grasp will improve over time. After using the device for a couple of weeks or months, the child should try to write, color, or draw without the HandRight to see if the mature pattern of pencil grasp and manipulation has neurologically hardened. Or, in other words, good habits have “set in”. If the child reverts back to a less mature pattern, continue to use the device. And, the child may ultimately choose to continue to use the device, which is acceptable if they are producing developmentally appropriate motor output.
Why is proper pencil grasp important?
Immature pencil grasps create stress on the hand and reduce accuracy, precision, and dexterity of the hand. In other words, holding it wrong makes writing, drawing, and coloring harder. The hand develops fatigue, the pace is slow, and the child becomes tired and frustrated, which will interfere with successful completion of academic activities, and a lesser desire to participate.
Why is writing important?
Karin H. James and Laura Englehard published research in 2012 asserting that letter formation through the act of handwriting activates areas of the brain that can help reading acquisition in children. They also found that handwriting letters helps children recognize and rapidly name letters, which is an essential skill in learning to read. Their research also revealed that handwriting helps students contextualize the variability in print which then leads to “enhanced letter identification skill” (James and Engelhard, 2012).
Can The HandRight be used in the left or right hand?
Can The HandRight be used in the left or right hand?
Is The handRight a fidget toy?
Yes, it was designed also to serve this function. Some children experience restless hands and The HandRight can help with that because it is flexible and comfortable in the hand.
How durable is The HandRight?
The HandRight should last beyond the child’s developmental needs. The material is tested and high quality, so its life expectancy is years. However, extreme treatment can damage the product. The HandRight should last for years if the care instructions are followed. The care instructions are available on this web page.
